Chapter 9

Did I really just say that?

Did I just freak Logan out because I got overeager about spending time with him? What the hell was I thinking?

I wasn’t thinking—that’s the problem.

Logan fucked me so good that it obviously scrambled my brains and made me think it was okay to say any damned thing that popped into my head. Why don’t I just cut to the chase and ask him to marry me and give me all of his money while I’m at it?

I give myself a shake, trying to clear my head.

Am I misreading this whole situation?

Maybe Lucas was right when he said I should make sure that the guy I’m interested in really feels the same way as me… Maybe it’s time to cool things off with Logan? At least until we can spend some quality time together and figure out what’s going on between us.

But that sounds like shit, too.

I don’t want to slow this down.

I look at the shelf where Logan just had his way with me. The boxes and sacks of dry food are scattered everywhere. How in the world can I slow that down? I’ve never felt that in touch with a guy before—there’s no way I can turn my back on it now.

I’m just overthinking all of this.

That’s what I do when I get into these kinds of emotional situations. I blow everything out of proportion until I’ve got myself so turned around that I can’t tell what’s right from wrong. I need to focus on just making it through the next few hours without losing my mind. Everything will be better when I’m back in the City and can get a full night’s sleep in my own bed.

I give myself another once-over before deciding that I’ve waited long enough. Everyone is probably thinking I’m not going to show up at all and I don’t want to deal with how they will look at me when I show up this late…

Just as I’m reaching for the pantry door I hear the unmistakable sound of someone walking into the kitchen. I freeze, my arm outstretched, trying not to make a sound. A long moment passes while I strain to hear any movement from the kitchen. The last thing I need is one of the house staff saying he found me hiding in the pantry.

After what feels like an eternity I finally let out a breath. I’m obviously just getting so high strung that my brain is playing tricks on me…

I push the door open and light from the pantry spills into the darkened kitchen. My heart seizes in my chest when I see the still form of Mara standing in front of the door, staring right at me.

“I thought I might find you here,” she says, giving me a smug look. “I think it’s about time the two of us had a little chat…”

Fuck.
